Lessons from Aerospace Leaders: Korea and Turkiye

To truly understand the potential for nation-building through aerospace, it is instructive to examine the trajectories of countries like Korea and Turkiye over the past five decades. Korean Aerospace Industry (KAI), since its inception in 1999, has evolved into an independent and globally competitive player. Formed through the consolidation of aerospace interests from the South Korean Government and private sectors specializing in satellites, rockets and navigation systems, KAI exemplifies a concerted national effort. Korean Air's involvement in aircraft design and aero manufacturing further highlights this integrated strategy. With significant investments such as the USD412 million spent on space research and development in 2018 (OECD data), Korea has fostered a dynamic aerospace sector that is now a global force. These examples highlight the critical role of sustained government commitment, strategic consolidation of capabilities and significant investment in research and development as foundational pillars for achieving aerospace independence and global competitiveness.

Similarly, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI/TUSAS), a state-owned entity, was established in June 1973 under the Ministry of Industry and Technology with the explicit goal of reducing Turkiye's "foreign dependence" in defense. TAI's comprehensive product portfolio spans aerostructures, aircraft, helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and space systems, demonstrating a vertically integrated approach from design and development to manufacturing, modernization, integration and life cycle support. This strategic, state-backed investment has been instrumental in building a robust domestic aerospace ecosystem.

  1. I had the opportunity to intern at TUSAŞ in Ankara, working on KAAN’s Avionic System Development and Test Environment. Through that experience, I witnessed how Türkiye’s commitment to aerospace independence is reflected in every stage of development from software integration to system testing. The level of collaboration between teams and the focus on building indigenous capability were truly impressive. It reinforced for me how strategic national investment and a unified vision can transform a country into a strong and self-reliant aerospace leader.
