Better late than never

As a leadership development educator at several Business Schools, I always reminded my MBA students and alumni that Board Members can help top management strike a balance between conflicting pulls: long-term versus short-term performance, internal versus external demands, and a CEO's personal tendencies. Most of the Directors' years of business experience make them particularly good at sifting through the hard and soft data to discern whether non-performance in short-term is due to management's inability to execute change.

Based on my corporate experience & teaching research, I found Boards can make a major contribution by providing another perspective on the company's internal realities, such as people. The board's greater objectivity can provide fresh perspectives on business issues and able to spot unnecessary energy drains & other managerial blind spots that may simply be too close to home for the CEO to see.

In this context, I was pleased to meet Board members and management of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) when accompanying CPA S. Suppiah, Chairman of Book Project ‘The Malaysia Airlines We Built" & Shulhameed, President of MAS Retirees Association, to hand deliver the said book to the prominent corporate leaders. Among them who I am familiar with are: Tan Sri Dr. Bashir Ahmad, Tan Sri Krishnan Tan, Dato' Zaiviji Ismail of Shell & Madam Boo Hui Yee - Chief Financial Officer. (www.malaysiaaviationgroup.com.my)

Tan Sri Dr. Bashir is a home grown talent with MAS who joined as a management trainee & moved up to become Executive Vice President Airlines. After his 29 years with MAS, he became the Aviation Advisor to the Ministry of Transport and then appointed as CEO Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB) and currently as Chairman of Mass Rapid (MRT) Corporation owned by MOF Inc. (https://www.mymrt.com.my)

Tan Sri Dr. Bashir is the lead writer for Chapter One for the said MAS Book on page 16-19 entitled “The Birth of Malaysian Airline System Berhad”. (Malaysian Airlines System Retirees Association (MASRA) Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak)

    Totally agree Sir. Ultimately, Board members are responsible to steer and accountable on the Company performance.
